How your Lungs, Stomach and the Rib Cage can
Help You to Establish Healthful Breathing Pattern
...

You can survive without food for weeks. And you can get along without water for days. But, most people can't survive for more than a few minutes without breathing.

Correct breathing habits will supply your mind and body with more oxygen. As you probably know by now, every cell in your body needs oxygen to work and perform its functions. Your cells need oxygen to produce and use energy and to help remove waste products.

So, your body needs optimal levels of oxygen for its normal cycle of building, repair, and elimination.  Without sufficient supplies of oxygen, the integrity of your cells will be compromised. Keep in mind that, healthy cells = healthy body. The opposite is also true...

That's why it's important that you practice correct breathing methods. That way you'll take in large amounts of oxygen form the environmental air. And, that will keep your mind and body happy.

Here's the problem...

Most people don't realise that the largest part of their lungs is not at the top of the chest.  Your lungs are widest just above the diaphragm. So, chest breathing (by itself) is not the best way to take a deep breath.

If you fill only the top portion of your lungs when you inhale, you will soon be out of breath, and you will tire easily. If you're slouch at your computer often, it's very likely that your breathing is compromised and shallow.

Bad Breathing Habits = Bad Oxygen Uptake = Poor Health!

That's why, it's important that you identify your breathing pattern. You need to find out how your breathing pattern changes throughout the day. For example, how is your breathing right now...? Or, when you're feeling anxious and stressed...? How is your breathing as soon as you get up in the morning or retire for the day...? Or, just before you make the sales call or presentation...?

Here's an exercise that will help you teach your body correct breathing habits:

Simply stand before a mirror and keep your back straight and shoulders back. Now, take a deep breath. With proper breathing, you should see little movement in the chest and shoulders. To get a full deep breath, breathe from the diaphragm while simultaneously expanding the chest.

To test yourself, place one hand on each side of the lower part of your rib cage. Now breathe deeply. If you are breathing properly, you will not be sucking in your belly and raising your shoulders. Instead, you will feel the ribs move slightly up and out.

When breathing, make sure that you fill the lower part of your lungs first. When this part fills, the lower part of your rib cage will expand sideways. At the same time, the diaphragm will move down, gently pressing the stomach and the intestines. If you're doing this correctly, you should feel slight pressure around your waist area. It may help to picture your abdomen as a balloon. As you draw air in, it expands.

Next, control the outflow of air. Most people waste the air by letting it escape with a rush. Expel it gradually. Let your diaphragm expel the air and observe how it makes you feel. Learning correct breathing pattern will obviously take practice and patience. But, it's well worth the effort!

Here's another exercise you can do anytime you're feeling tense, stressed and anxious. Some people call this the 1:4:2 ratio of deep relaxation breathing. Simply, inhale one count, hold four counts, exhale two counts. If you inhaled for four seconds, you'd hold for sixteen, and exhale for eight.

So, breathe deeply with the diaphragm, imagine your abdomen as a balloon. After establishing a natural rhythm, take a deep four second breath in and hold it for sixteen seconds. Now, slowly release the breath through your mouth, using a count of eight to pace yourself. Just ensure this feels comfortable for you.

This deep diaphragmatic breathing maximises your oxygen intake and relaxes muscles, leading to a relaxation response. And it detoxifies your body!

Truth is that deep diaphragmatic breathing cannot amply satisfy your body's never ending craving for oxygen. Simply because the environment, the pollutants, our lifestyle, toxic preservatives and chemicals in our water, food, and the air we breathe, greatly reduce the amount of oxygen available to the cells, organs and tissues.

So, while you should teach your body correct breathing pattern, you also need to supplement your body with the oxygen it so desperately needs for optimal health. P. S. Stress causes breathing to become erratic and shallow. When under stress, you may find yourself breathing too fast or holding your breath for prolonged periods of time without even knowing about it. So anytime you feel that stress is grinding you down, why not start practicing deep, diaphragmatic breathing? It will calm your mind and revive your body. And, the more your practice, the better you'll get!
